How to build a successful fitness blog, how to get a 100,000 page view in less than a year from opening a blog?
If you have a fitness blog yourself or want to open one, or even if you are curious about how to increase traffic quickly, you must read this article.
I will explain each step of how I accomplish this goal, and I will share some experiences, and you can also copy my success.
In order to give you some motivation, I can reveal that by the end of January this year (four and a half years later), the number of visits is close to 600,000 per month.
There is a picture of the truth, here is a screenshot of the traffic growth in July 2012 to open a blog to January 2017.
As a reminder, although you’re reading about the fitness blog, the content and tips apply to other types of blogs and websites.
I know that you want to see all kinds of data and charts, but let’s briefly introduce the fitness industry.
There is no doubt that the fitness industry is a huge market with billions of dollars. On the one hand, tens of thousands of people are looking for ways to exercise and lose weight; on the other hand, major companies spend huge sums of money each year to promote and sell their diet formulas, fitness equipment, various complementary foods and so on. In between, there are a large number of professional media (newspapers, magazines, websites) that provide a large number of free fitness information and consulting services.
Many people will wonder how a new fitness blog can compete with these giants and even get traffic and profits from this market.
Well, the core is quality. Have you heard that “content is king?”
In the past 10 years, all the advice mentioned in this sentence is the most critical reason. Make the content better than the various techniques mentioned below.
In addition, there is a bowl of chicken soup: the Internet is not for a few people to play, but a fair public stage, waiting for you to prove! As long as you can prove that your content is helpful to the reader, success is not far from you.
I really got to the point.
Step 1: Learn about your blog’s subject area
This is something you must do before you start a blog, knowing as much as possible about the subject area of your blog.
As far as I am concerned, I have been writing articles on fitness topics since 2008. I know this industry very well, so I think this is one of the main reasons for the rapid growth of blog traffic.
When you have the idea of writing a blog, open a browser and use the search engine to spend a lot of time understanding the topic on the Internet.
Look at who is in the field, the content of the first page of the search engine (what type of content they provide, the frequency of updates, the length of the article), what those social networking sites are about, and so on.
You can also use search engines or related analysis tools to help you understand the situation of your competitors and the keywords, chains, etc. related to the topic.
Step 2: Keyword Analysis
A good blog starts with keyword analysis, I know you may know, but I also want to remind you once again that you will have a reward in the time spent on keyword analysis.
Remember when I mentioned the competition in the fitness industry? The competition on the Internet is also the same. When you enter the high competition industry, don’t waste time researching the hot keywords. This has been firmly controlled by the big sites. It is. All you have to do is research the long tail keyword.
There are a lot of tutorials on the long tail keywords on the web, so I won’t repeat them here. I only add the following suggestions:
Don’t be too obsessed with the number of long tail keywords. Many analysis tools provide a lot of corresponding long tail keywords. In the early days of the blog, you only need to pay attention to the long tail keywords in front of these rankings.
Through the gradual accumulation, your blog is getting more and more attention from search engines and rankings are constantly improving.
Step 3: Develop an article publishing plan and stick to it
You want to get traffic from search engines, you need to have enough content, the reason is very simple.
Especially the fitness industry needs more content. When you start blogging, you need to determine how many new articles you can post, make plans, and stick to them.
I published 10 articles on the day I started the blog, and then I set up a plan to publish three articles a week and stick to it now.
Regardless of the wind and rain, the thunder does not move three times a week. If you take this blog seriously, this is a promise that should be completed.
How many articles are published per week depends on many factors. You can’t be too optimistic to set too high a goal. On the other hand, don’t forget that a good blog is built on quality and quantity.
My advice is to have at least three articles a week, and also refer to the situation of your competitors, then set the plan and complete.
Step 4: Create high quality content
At the beginning of the article I said that the quality of blog content is a key factor.
In the health field, the quality of the article is even more important. You must be very cautious when giving advice to the health of others.
Unlike other fields, the health field can become an expert through experience.
Just being eager to learn about nutrition and fitness information is not enough. You have to be an expert (the one with a certificate) in order to gain the trust of readers (or other sites in the industry).
There are three options:
Become an expert and obtain a certificate through course training;
Avoid giving advice on health issues, but share your personal feelings or experiences about how to control weight and fitness;
Hire an expert.
When the blog started, I chose the second option mentioned above. I have been enthusiastic about fitness and healthy life. I have too many personal stories to share with the world.
Soon, when my experience is running out, in order to continue to attract readers and other peers, I must need more content than experience, I need a certified expert to help analyze cases related to nutrition and fitness, I think take the third Choose to hire a certified expert.
This is a tough decision. It is a risk to increase spending before the blog has no income. But I understand the industry and understand the needs of the fitness community. I decided to take this risk.
Speaking of this, you may have some confusion. I want to clarify first. I have not suggested that you try to hire an expert in order to make your blog topic more professional.
I mean, you have to understand the rules of the game in your blog’s subject area and then create as much high-quality article content as possible. Because the fitness industry is a highly professional field, I take the employee’s approach when I have insufficient capacity.
Carefully analyze your competitors and create better content (including article theme, form and length)
Use case studies and use data to support the ideas your article will express
Not extreme, more analysis from the positive and negative aspects of the incident.
Don’t try to sell products or services, you should focus on how to create value for your readers.
Step 5: Do SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Once you have good content, the next step is to do SEO. Good SEO will help your article attract more attention and traffic.
In general, SEO can be divided into three parts:
Technically SEO: Mainly to improve the technical aspects of blog sites, including indexing, XML site maps, URL link patterns and other technologies to help search engines better read your blog.
Online web page SEO: Includes page title and description, text format, image seo, mobile friendliness, access speed, etc. Help search to better understand your articles and pages.
Offline SEO: This usually refers to an industry website that builds an external chain and tries to link more. This will improve your blog’s ranking in search engines.
These don’t seem so difficult. There are many SEO teaching content on the Internet. You can set up a plan, learn slowly from the basics, and then have experience, you can find the feeling.
I started to learn slowly from the first level of technical SEO, practice while learning, and then began to optimize articles and pages, with emphasis on titles and images.
Now, every blogger knows the importance of the outer chain to the ranking. When I started blogging in 2012, I also know a little, but that year, Google released a new algorithm and cracked down on some bad behaviors. . Therefore, I decided not to consider any external chain construction, but only concerned with the construction of the content, allowing the external chain to develop naturally.
For those new bloggers, my suggestion is that, like me, don’t deliberately pay attention to the external chain. When the blog is more than six months and there is a lot of good content, it is not too late to consider the outer chain.
At that time, you also accumulated a lot of SEO experience, and then slowly develop the outer chain, do not take shortcuts, the speed is not up to speed.
Step 6: Promote your work (in addition to social media)
We all know that through social media reprints, articles can spread quickly, and if you are willing to pay a little promotion fee, the effect may be better.
I also started to absorb fans from social media, and the early results were much better than now. In addition to social media, I also tried many ways to promote my blog, among which the better results are:
I added the blog to the chrome browser app store. This is a good resource that is not discovered. Thousands of readers download my app plugin from the store to the browser, and there is a reminder when a new article is published. I didn’t expect such a good effect at all, so I said that many things you didn’t try, you don’t know the result. Unfortunately, in June 2016, the app store revision no longer provides this feature.
I made a blog app and uploaded it to Google, Amazon, and Microsoft’s app store. At the time, there were almost no similar apps, so it also brought me a lot of traffic.
I also gave the blog a third-party online health qualification. Although it does not bring traffic, it brings confidence to more readers. This is also very important.
Step 7: Don’t forget your readers
Until now we are all discussing the importance of content and SEO, but you must not ignore the reader’s reading experience.
The first is website design, to ensure the legibility of the article, in addition to provide readers with multiple visits.
My approach is to provide a range of free tools (healthy diet plans, calorie calculators and statistics, etc.) to help readers achieve weight loss and fitness goals.
These tools have caused readers to return and the formation of the community. In addition, the most important thing is to collect a large number of lists for my mailing list.
You should also consider how to attract and retain readers based on the characteristics of your blog.
Is there a profit?
At the beginning of the article, I deliberately did not mention the benefits of blogs and how I paid those experts and other fees, but I know that if you don’t understand these answers, you will not be satisfied.
Blog operations have been losing money in the years since I started blogging!
I am not surprised because I am prepared to take on this risk from the beginning.
I know that if you want to make a profit, you must have enough traffic first. You must have enough content and tools to get enough traffic.
This blog is profitable by Google advertising, and the five-digit annual income in the last four years is enough to cover early expenses and a decent surplus.
At the same time, I also tried other profitable ways, such as product sales, promotion commissions, etc., and finally I think Google ads are better. Because of this method alone, I don’t have to distract from selecting and testing various products, management, sales, and after-sales. I know that if you look for marketing companies and teamwork, it will bring more benefits, but this will add too much trouble. So I still use Google ads simply.
to sum up
In order to remind readers who insist on seeing here, don’t forget, I still categorize the points to help you apply to your blog or website.
First of all: There are no secret recipes for successful blogs. The tips I know about blogs for various subject areas are as follows:
- Create better content
- Do a good job online SEO
- Carefully carry out offline SEO
- Adhere to regular creation
- Building a community
- Patience + hard work
Second: Understand your blog’s subject area and gradually become an expert. Understand and continue to focus on your competitors.
Finally: Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. If you finish reading this article and start blogging, you can at least avoid many mistakes. However, many lessons will still occur in your blog career, and you will be mistaken if you make a mistake. There is nothing wrong with it.
Add another bowl of chicken soup: In the first step of the article, I mentioned that I wrote a blog on fitness topics in 2008. It was my first blog. It took me several years to get satisfactory traffic, and now This fitness blog (the secret of calories) is my fourth attempt in the fitness field.
