8 Best & effective home remedies for Anemia

Anemia is one issue, I had suffered from when I was 17 years old. I felt really weak and I couldn’t walk straight due to low blood level in my body.

Anemia takes place when body’s red blood count goes low. Red cells include hemoglobin, that delivers oxygen to organs as well as tissues.It decreases the oxygen carrying capacity of blood.Oxygen is required for energy production in us; hence, anemia decreases our productivity and makes us feel tired. 

It doesn’t let us bring out the best of ourselves and decreases our work capacity.  It is important for pregnant and lactating women to have enough iron for proper growth and development of the child. There are several levels of anemia:

  • Mild anemia: It is when the hemoglobin level is 10-11.9 g/dl in females

  • Severe anemia: The hemoglobin level is less than 7g/dl in females

Prevalence of anemia

It is estimated that globally, around 1.62 billion people, which is 24.8% of the total population. In country like India, one in every two woman is anemic.

Anemia is more prevalent in women as compared to men and much more in developing countries as compared to the developed countries. It is estimated that about 20-40 % maternal deaths in India are due to anemia.

Types of anemia

There are several types of anemia and it is important to know the underlying cause of anemia to get a proper treatment for it.  The most common types of anemia are:

  • Iron deficiency anemia: It is caused due to lack of iron because of blood loss, increase in requirement during pregnancy, lactation and for growth during adolescence. It can be treated by intake of iron rich foods in diet and/or iron supplements.
  • Pernicious anemia: It is caused due to the deficiency of Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 is required for formation of red blood cells. It can be caused due if the absorption of vitamin B12 is not occurring properly in the body or may be due to several other reasons.
  • Megaloblastic anemia: It is caused due to the deficiency of vitamin B12 or folate or both.
  • Hemolytic anemia: It is the condition in which red blood cells are removed and destroyed before their normal lifespan from the blood.
  • Thalassaemia: It is an inherited blood disorder that causes the body to make less hemoglobin and fewer red blood cells.

1. Beetroot

A friend of mine was suffering from anemia and he suggested that having beetroot can lessen its chances. Beetroot is known to be high in fiber, calcium and sulfur as well. Besides that, it can also boost immunity power and increase the count of red blood cells.

How to use:

  1. Blend one beetroot and carrots together. You also need to take sweet potato in this mixture.
  2. Once ready, drink this mixture once daily.
  3. You can also include beetroot in your diet and salad. It adds nutritional value to your routine.

2. Spinach

When I was a baby, my mom used to advise me to have spinach because it is a powerhouse of food things. If a diet is rich in green leafy veggies, it can cure anemia. Spinach is very rich in vitamin B12 and also folic acid that helps in recovering. It increases the iron level in the body.

How to use:

  1. Take spinach and make a soup of it everyday. Firstly, take spinach and make puree of it. Add olive oil in a pan and add garlic. Finally, mix spinach in it. Cook it for some time and then have it.

3. Pomegranate

  1. Mix the juice of this one with cinnamon powder and honey as well. Drink this with your breakfast daily.
  2. You can also have its seed powder with a glass of milk at least two times per day.
  3. A medium sized pomegranate should be made when you have anemia. Eat it every morning empty stomach.

4. Sesame seeds

If you have been looking for an easy treatment, sesame seeds can be found in your kitchen as well. It offers iron for the body.

How to use:

  1. Soak the seeds for about three hours. Once done, make a paste of this one and add honey. Mix well and then drink this mixture everyday at least twice.
  2. You can also soak them and then make a paste of it with milk, honey and jaggery. Drink it to see the results.

5. Dates

Don’t dates taste delicious? I remember this one time when my friend’s mom fed me with them and I ran to tell my mom that I want a full packet of it. They are rich in vitamin C and also play a role in absorption of iron.

How to use:

  1. Soak dates in milk and then next morning, take them out. Eat them and once done, drink the milk.
  2. You can also eat dry dates and then have a cup of warm milk.

6. Apple

They say apples keep a doctor away. So think of it and have apples when you are suffering from anemia. Since they are rich in nutrients, they are very helpful.

How to use:

  1. Eat them once each day. Choose green apples as they are useful for the skin as well.
  2. You can also have fresh apple juice. Add honey to it. Have this juice daily at least twice a day.

7. Banana

If you think bananas make you fat, you are highly mistaken. They are known to increase the levels of red blood cells. They are highly essential and it is necessary you have them when you are down with anemia.

How to use:

  1. Eat one banana daily with honey. Do this twice everyday.
  2. You can also mix banana with amla juice. Have it once or twice a day.

8. Dried black currant

Black currant includes iron and vitamin C and it will be very effective for you to treat anemia. It enhances body’s ability to take in iron and forms red blood cells leading to increase in the hemoglobin level.

How to use:

  1. I had tried this remedy once and it actually worked on me. You need to soak dry black currant overnight.
  2. The next day, remove all the water and seeds as well.
  3. Eat them everyday before you have breakfast. It is beneficial and works fast on anemia.
  4. Do this for a few weeks.
